Goodbye Summer

The summer always seems to come and go so fast doesn’t it?  Labor Day is a few days away, and we at The PBEye have stopped to reflect on some of our experiences over the summer.

First, we thank (and very much miss) our summer interns So Jin Kim, Juliet Mun, John Treat, and Alex Wodarczyk for their hard work over the past few months.  We have high expectations for all four of them and wish them the best of luck in their studies and careers.

We also are extremely grateful to two special guests who spent time with the PBI interns and staff.  First we were visited by the Hon. Patricia Wald, former Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and former judge on the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia.  Judge Wald, who currently serves on the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, spoke to us about her distinguished career and provided guidance on building a career in the law and doing work for the public good.  We thank Judge Wald and send special congratulations to her for receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom this year.

Then we sat down for lunch with Jim Sandman, president of the Legal Services Corporation and member of the Law Firm Pro Bono Project Advisory Committee.  Sandman also offered us advice on building a legal career and, as head of the country’s largest funder of civil legal aid programs, gave us unique insight into the importance of legal aid and pro bono to the justice system.  We thank him as well for sharing his time and knowledge with us.

In other news, PBI President and CEO Esther F. Lardent was recognized as one of The American Lawyer’s top 50 innovators, and our efforts to remove multijurisdictional practice obstacles to in-house pro bono have continued to be successful.

Finally, this week, for the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom and Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream Speech,” we took a look at ways law firms are working toward the goals of the March to advance civil rights today.

Have a great weekend and we’ll catch up with you after Labor Day!
